Ultrasonic Distance Measurement with a Microcontroller-based Device

My BSc thesis is about the design and implementation of an ultrasonic distance sensor and an external display unit. The thesis explains the principle of ultrasonic distance measurement and the chosen implementation of this principle as well.

The main task of the sensor is to measure distances in the range of a few centimetres to a few metres. A possible application is to measure distances indoors more comfortably, without the use of a measuring tape. The device also has some extra functions: the measured data can be saved and sent to a PC via USB connection.

The sensor can establish radio communication with an external display. The display unit is capable of showing the measured distance on a more visible display and it can sound an alarm. This provides the opportunity for another application: the sensor can be used in a garage for proximity detection (the display can show the distance between a vehicle and the wall, and if the vehicle gets too close, the device can alert the driver with an audible alarm).
