Ultrasonic Distance Measurement with a Microcontroller-based Device

In my bachelor’s thesis I write about the functionality and the designing of a

distance detector designed by me during the semester. The device is controlled by an

STM microcontroller and uses ultrasonic waves to determine distance. My thesis

presents the theoritical backgound of the measuring method and the specific steps I took

during the designing process.

The main purpose of the device is displaying the distance from the target object

on an LCD, but it also has other features like saving the measured values in memory,

managing the data from a built in menu and the possibility of connecting a secondary

device.

Accuracy was a crucial aspect when I was designing. Thanks to the temperature

data, provided by the on-board sensor chip and the proper usage of the timer

peripherials of the microcontroller, I managed to reach an approximately 10mm

accuracy. In my opinion this is sufficient for certain applications and can be the optimal solution when where the traditional distance measuring methods can not work. (e.g. limited space)
