Urban traffic model and control

Nowadays, the urban traffic congestion is a frequent phenomenon. To avoid this, several algorithms have been developed. These algorithms are able to produce flowing traffic with the proper setup of traffic lights.

The topics of this thesis are modeling urban traffic, with or without synchronized traffic lights using genetic algorithm for optimization, the simulation and the graphical display of the network. In order to solve the tasks, I developed a framework in MATLAB.

The model computes the traffic inside the network based on the number of the input vehicles. Based on the present model, a significant amount of outcome can be spared because there is no need for traffic sensors inside the traffic network. The model takes the effective times, the travelling times, congestions and amber times into consideration. Furthermore, with use of the model, there is an opportunity to manage vehicles and pedestrians with right of way.

With the use of the framework, there is an opportunity to simulate the initialized model and afterwards, to display the result of the simulation as a video.
