Study the Application of a System for the Design and Development of Electric Cars

In the framework of a contract between the Budapest University of Technology and Economics and the manufactor a new test method and measuring instrument has been developed at the Department of Automation and Applied Informatics. The measuring instrument makes it possible to carry out fast and accurate measurement of iron losses in high speed permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSM).

Several novel solutions are applied in the system, for example a method for the separation the iron loss into hysteresis and eddy current losses, the correction of the change in the magnetic flux density due to varying temperature of the rotor permanent magnets and the calculation of the instantaneous permanent magnet temperatures.

The aims of my final project were to get acquinted with the hardware and software of the test equipment, to refine the relationships between the flux density and the temperature of the permanent magnets, to define the higher harmonic components of the voltage measured by the sensor coil in the stator and to experiment with various arrangements of the sensor coil to improve the accuracy of the flux density.
