Evaluation of design system for lightning protection

Summary

This thesis deals with the topics of the preparing IEC 62305 lightning protection standard.

The latest edition of the standard will be edited probably in 2014. In my thesis I deal with some questions and calculations according to preparing standard.

I study the protection angle method, in connection with the new standard. In the standard’s second edition the determination of protection angle is based on a not correct idea. I correct this error, and I give a mathematical formula to determine the protection angle.

In the following chapters, I deal with the risk analysis. First I review a risk assessment program. With this program I do a few calculations for family houses. From these calculations, I try to say some conclusions about the require of the lightning protection.

Finally, I examine the case studies of the standard’s second edition according to the forthcoming third edition’s revised risk assessment, and if it’s necessary I recalculate the given example.
