MÁV-Start Zrt. has enabled its passengers since 2011 to live track the positions and schedule data of their trains. However at the time of writing this thesis this function can be accessed only from a desktop client, whereas the few non-official mobile applications provide a very limited functionality compared to the original website.
The application created in this thesis provides a solution for this problem as it accesses all the data that is available at the original website with an API created by the MÁV-Start Zrt. specifically for this purpose. Additionally the application offers a much wider range of functionality: with the help of data from other sources it’s able to serve the designer’s purpose of creating a „railway knowledge base” that can help the passenger from planning a trip until getting off the train, providing all the information that one can find useful or interesting.
While using the application the user can access two separate data types:
• With the help of schedule data the user can plan a trip using various options and learn where to change for an other train or which platform to go to.
• With the help of live data one can have an overview of the position of each train in the country including their details and delay information. The user can also have the positions of the trains displayed on the camera image of the phone.
Besides, the user can access the data of the entire Hungarian railway network and display the detailed page of any station or railway line in the country. With an RSS reader the latest news of the railway company are also available.
Moreover, the application can be customized, e.g. frequently used trains can be marked as favourites, the default delay setting used by MÁV can be changed, as well as the traffic of the railway network can be filtered down to certain lines.
