The Internet and the Web plays an important role in our lives, it has become so common, that no day goes by without using it. This thesis is about introducing modern web technologies as well as designing and implementing a web portal. In my thesis I compare the Web 1.0 which is for providing information, the community-based Web 2.0 and the semantic based Web 3.0, and compare and contrast the differences between them. Today's Web publishers’ tool is the HTML markup language, which has evolved over 20 years. The current new version of it is the HTML5, a new milestone in the development of HTML. The language has been extended with new tags, types, and attributes. One of the main new features is the ability to manage media content. The HTML5 is one of the most modern web technologies that greatly simplifies and accelerates development of web sites.

In addition to my thesis about modern web technologies, this work also contains an application example worked out in detail. My goal was to design and implement a web portal for the members of the Students Without Boundaries program. The goal of web portal is to keep information up to date and make it available to members, facilitating the work of the leaders all around the word. This task involves the design of database for stored data, development of roles and visualization. In my thesis I present the creation process of the portal, from planning to implementation.
