Due to the rapid development of mobile computing, smartphones and tablets are becoming more and more powerful and accessible to people. These portable devices have many evident advantages, and their growing market caused the appearance of a wide variety of applications. One type of these consists of the software products that help us to learn and to develop our skills.
For musicians, the development of musical hearing is a long and never-ending process, which requires a lot of practising. Owing to the protoperties of the practised exercises, helping ear training with mobile devices is expedient by all means.
I have decided to create an ear training application, and chosen iOS as a toolkit, which is one of the most popular mobile platforms nowadays. The finished application offers ten different ear training exercises, which are highly customisable via settings. The software logs and creates statistics about the users’ results, guiding them on their further progression. Both the iPhone and the iPad devices are supported.
In order to realise the project, it was required to get acquainted with the capabilities of the platform, to form a user interface, and to solve the problem of sound generation and music notation rendering. The implementation phase was preceded by a thorough design process, and after the completion of the software I have used different methods to test and monitor its operation.
