Abstract

The evolution of wireless technologies may be discretely divided into different generations on the basis of level of the maturity of the latent technology. The classification into generations is not standardized on any given measures or parameters and as such is not a strict demarcation. However, what is a perspective is commonly agreed, by both industry and academia, and therefore conceived as an unwritten norm. At this time, there are two efforts towards the development of the next generation - the wireless access technology "4G". 3GPP or 3rd Generation Partnership Project (brand named as Long Term Evolution) is the name of 4G European efforts and 3GPP2 or 3rd Generation Partnership Project 2 (Ultra named brand Mobile Broadband). This survey attempts to present an evolution and outlines aim to development efforts of these technologies that mark the future of the wide band wide area the wireless access technologies.

To reach the target downlink peak data rate of 1 Gbps 4G will require wider channel bandwidths that are currently specified in LTE Release 8. Therefore, the only way to achieve significantly higher data rates is to increase the bandwidth of the channel using carrier aggregation. Carrier aggregation offers peak data rates successively higher and better broadband experience in the coverage area. Date scale rates with the amount of spectrum for 3GPP Rel 10 to support up to 5 carriers with up to 100 MHz of spectrum and commercial solutions to support up to 3 supports with peak data rates up 450Mbps (Cat 5). It expected that LTE, CA key would play an important role in the mobile networks of the near future.
