As network infrastructure elements such as routers, sensors and switches, etc have increased rapidly, the total amount of power consumption has considerably soaring. In pursuit of reducing power consumption as well as maintaining work efficiency, a new IEEE 802.3az Task Force was launched in early 2007 to focus on this issue for Ethernet and present IEEE 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet(EEE) standard which achieves energy savings by using a low power mode when the link is idle in 2010. But the overheads in transitions between active state and low power mode can also lead to heavier energy consumption if the traffic rate is high enough. In this dissertation, analytical models to estimate energy consumption of a standard non EEE link and an EEE link will be presented and implemented.Real traffic data will be retrieved by Whiteshark to validate the models.Meanwhile, performance evaluation will be made in both EEE models and non-EEE model so that maintaining the balance between performance and energy efficiency.
