Home automation is a category of automation that is targeted for private homes and it is used

to convert certain activities at home from manual work to automated work. The task is to

overview the currently available technologies used for home automation, and design and

develop home automation device that is cheap and affordable, yet practical, usable and

modern. With the help of this thesis, show that home automation is possible with affordable

circuits and microcontrollers, which look modern, perform as good as expensive commercial

devices.

The task will include the followings:

· Give an overview of home automation technologies

· Select a wireless technology to be used and give an overview of that technology

· Specify and design a wireless window blind shade controller for home automation

· Implement the designed system and evaluate its performance

· Document the whole work done

The task will include the followings:

- Give an overview of home automation technologies

o Automation is the use of control systems and information technologies to reduce the need for human work in the production of goods and services. Home automation is a category of automation that is targeted for private homes and it is used to convert certain activities at home from manual work to automated work. Smart homes which have long been portrayed as a popular concept are fast becoming a reality. Today as a result of technological and product developments, integrated lighting, home entertainment, security, heating and cooling systems and motorized window coverings can all be controlled through one network. This project is an introduction into home automation and start of the project to design and build window blind shade automation.

- Select a wireless technology to be used and give an overview of that technology

o PIC 16F690 to build a basic window shade blinder control that moves up and down via a remote control and a small motor. The remote control is expected to control the up/down movement of the shades using radio communication. A remote control using 433 MHz will be used to communicate with the receiver. It would be standard 433 MHz transmitter and receiver modules on each end.

- Specify and design a wireless window blind shade controller for home automation

o The transmitter is a remote control that has a PT2262 remote control encoder built in. The PT2262 is a remote control encoder paired with PT2272 utilizing CMOS Technology. This encodes data and address pins into a serial coded waveform suitable for radio frequency. In order to receive the signals transmitted by the wireless radio frequency remote control, a receiver is needed. The receiver is attached to the circuit where the 16F690 microcontroller is residing. A RRQ8-XXX Superheterodyne Receiver is used. Front end SAW filter and Output Noise filter to obtain high immunity to electromagnetic interference XXX is for custom-specified working frequency (which is 433.92 MHz).

- Implement the designed system and evaluate its performance

o The MPLAB X IDE is the new graphical, integrated debugging tool set for all of Microchip’s more than 800 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit MCUs and digital signal controllers, and memory devices. It includes a feature-rich editor, source-level debugger, project manager, software simulator, and supports Microchip’s popular hardware tools, such as the MPLAB ICD 3 in-circuit debugger, PICkit™ 2 or 3, and MPLAB PM3 programmer. Use C programming language with the help of CC5X C Compiler for the PICmicro Devices.

- Document the whole work done

o Once the development is completed, the steps and research needs to be documented.
