Electrospinning is a novel technique to generate polymer nanofibers and has the capability to immobilize

enzymes by encapsulation into or onto nanofibers. In the proposed novel microchip structure microreactors

are formed as hollows in the chip body and the hollows are filled by enzymes encapsulated in nanofibers. The

aim of the project is to design and fabricate such microreactor chip and demonstrate the operation with an

actual enzyme reaction.

The students tasks are the following:

- Summarize the literature of nanofiber generation techniques, with an emphasis on electrospinning.

Introduce and compare the possible biological and biocatalytic applications of nanofiber structures

- Find the optimal parameters of PVA (poly-vinyl- alcohol) and PLA (polylactic-acid) nanofiber deposition

onto glass substrate by electrospinning, with and without enzyme

- Design the layout of electrospun microreactor chip and find the optimal parameters for laser engraving

the electrospun nanofiber layer

- Design and implement a process to construct electrospun microreactor chips

- Design a measurement setup to analyze the biocatalytic activity of the enzymes immobilized in the

electrospun microreactor

- Determine the kinetic parameters of the immobilized enzymes, analyze and conclude the results.
