Intelligent ambient lightning is a system that creates light effects around the screen that corresponds to the video content. It can result in a more immersive viewing experience, changing the interior decor or mood in the room. Besides, it also has health benefits, as adults and children may be staring at screens for extended periods of time, which causes the eye muscles to get stressed and tired. Ambient lightning means a screen with back light that aims to help ease eye fatigue and strain.
A system like that is only available built into certain televisions.
The goal of my thesis is to create a microcontroller module that is able to control an LED strip attached to the back of the monitor. The colors must correspond to the con-tent on the screen. A standalone unit was developed, that is connected to the LED strip, and communicates with the PC via USB, with the software written in C#. There are several features built in it such as response time setting, different types of pixel averaging and various effects. It is also possible to operate it without active PC connection, in this case it works as a simple ambient lightning.
As an extension, the device is also able to process sound, incoming through a 3.5mm Jack, and also an electret microphone. Based on the sound parameters, additional effects are available.
